CinAnn Love Facts of Life by mandygirl78 CinAnn Love Facts of Life by mandygirl78
I would love to give a very special and very huge thank to :iconbuffytheslayr: for doing this.

Cindy Webster (the one at the right) and Sue Ann Weaver were on the American sitcom "Facts of Life" for the first season (1979-1980). The show was retooled before the second season and they were dropped along with two other girls.

In the very first episode, Blair pretty much accused Cindy of being a lesbian, since she dressed like a boy and likes to touch girls. Of course she didn't say it like that, she told her that she was not 'normal'. Sue Ann happens to be her best friend in the show, albeit they had a serious fight in one of the episodes.

Anyhow, I wrote a fanfic about them at FF.net [link] and it's also at LJ [link]

Huh... shame they were dropped then, I wonder what would have happened if they'd remained through the subsequent seasons...

Funny you brought that up. Rumor was that the executives at the time didn't like the fact that Cindy was considered a lesbian, so throughout the show, they showed her more interest in boys. Of course that was 1979, now they would have played that one to death.

And in a later episode in which some of the season 1 girls return, Cindy is revealed to go from tomboy (season 1), gossip (the episode where Mrs. Garrett is thought to have a drinking problem due to her dilluted eyes causing her to stumble & when the secret that Blair confided in Jo was--as usual--blabbed all around school by Tootie), and finally to fashion model (the last cameo episode for the season 1 girls). I'm just glad that the Cynthia from the suicide episode wasn't Cindy from season 1, although the two girls share the same first name (Cindy is short for Cynthia) and Cindy doing herself in over her confusion about who she is would leave lasting impact, but it would make any fan of such characters sad and would also make Blair feel guilty, since it was Blair's competitiveness and a family divorce that drove Cynthia to commit suicide in the aforementioned episode.

They did the same thing to Jo, feminize her later on in the show. I heard it was because Nancy thought her character was too butchy, but who knows.

Except Jo was less touchy-feely than Cindy was.

In fact, her tomboyishness plus touchy-feely behavior is what prompted Blair to assume that Cindy batted for the other team (i.e. that she was lesbian or bisexual).

And incidentally, Cindy, Sue Ann, and Nancy (with never-seen boyfriend Roger on the phone as always) were in seasons 2 & 3 as cameos before being dropped completely. Funny that Blair was the one insulting Cindy (to which, Sue Ann came to the other girl's defense before Mrs. Garrett gave Cindy her motivational speech) when miss prim priss herself grows to have such a strong love-hate chemistry with equally rough 'n tumble Bronx native Jo from season 2 onward.

Well that's unfortunate how it ended up playing out, but not unexpected...
